not sure where i'm going with this; could be a phase..at the very least i feel i'm learning technique and application. wanted to make this feel like a quilt..thinking about continuing the sewing to really flatten down the piece. being that they're dried roses from the same group sewn in the 002 piece..they're slightly dryer and more delicate in this one and confronted even more frustration with them breaking. so - a study.
rose petals: organic, skin, delicate, alive, soft, fragrant
please tell me your thoughts/critique..much appreciated
really? you like? thank you...i'm very uncertain of my thoughts towards them. shadow boxes eh? i'll have to look into those; i've never purchased one before. they are so very fragile...i can barely move them and they tear - in definite need of a way to house them. thanks for the ideas and comments!! much appreciated! cheers!
I think this (and the other rose petal piece) are and interesting start to something that could become very interesting. It's beautiful to look at, and the colors are soft and pleasing. I think the black thread on the other one and the lack of color makes it a little macabre, like stitches or something, and you should stay away from that.
It's hard to suggest where you should go next, because it's just so different, but like renaissanceman3 said, a scanner is just not going to cut it. They look pressed up against a pane of glass right now, like some sort of specimen. I don't know what a light box is either, but you should check it out.
The background also contributes to that really flat feeling. A solid color doesn't add much interest to the piece. Try cropping out the edges, use some sort of texture, experiment! Good luck.
these are a really neat idea. i can't wait to see the multicolored petal ones. i would try a new shape. i don't know how well that would work since they are so fragile but it would be interesting.

yes, i'm excited too! picking up more roses tonight!! yay! i recently moved into my new home [walls are pretty bare] so i think i'm going to make a larger version and try and watercolor with the petals..and make somesort of collage/wall piece; say 18"x24" or some variant. not sure what shapes though...one idea i had was constructing a victorian bust out of the petals. so many ideas, so little time! lol thank you for the comments!!! much appreciated! cheers!
lol. i actually enjoyed the black thread on white rose petals...something so delicate becoming woven together with a thick stitch...strength. and playing with the black/white combo. i think that 'vintage' appeal with the delicate yet color-faded petals really made that one sing. t'was fun.
i used the scanner as a means of capturing the details within the petals. possibly on deviant those characteristics aren't visible, however, in person you can see every vein in the petals...ever crinkle.. i wanted to bring that to the digital memory that photographing it didn't express. digitally it's give and take. i have these pieces here, physical, virtual, 3d pieces that convey weightlessness, color, texture, light, shade and shadow..maybe i'll have to give up those qualities for the digital capture...not sure just yet, i'm still testing out. regarding light boxes...i have one and thats not what he was speaking of i doubt...thinking more it was shadow boxes which allow 3d objects to be suspended, collected or conveyed in a literal box with one face of it being glass...typically. i thought of building one like that, maybe of all plexi..or wood backing for my petal pieces..but i don't like the feeling of encapsulating something, almost wanting to keep it in a constant state of memory. thought about that a great deal actually. instead, i think i'm going to go out and find myself a lovely antiqued piece of wood and attach my petals to it...this will give me the support as well a background that i think would do a little better than a box for expression. white walls in a gallery. same concept.
anyways, i appreciate the comments and time you took to critique..you came to look at my gallery vs. what i had actually posted...so thats much appreciated. cheers!
It really seems like something an image can't do credit to. I agree encapsulation would be a bad thing, but the wood backround sounds like a great idea, much better than flat gray. As long as you're think about all this stuff, that's a very good sign the end product will be interesting to look at.
I'd like to show you some awesome nature related work from more or less unknown artists which deserve more attention - this is a must see, you won't regret it!!!
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
I'm a lover of visual impacts. I like brilliant colors and shapes. And I decided to collect a whole stack of deviations that reflect that taste. These pieces showcased below deserve every bit of publicity you can give them. x)P
